The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University is one of the largest and most distinguished university art museums in the country. The museum holds more than 60,000 works of art, ranging from ancient to contemporary, making it one of the most comprehensive collections in New Jersey.


History

The Zimmerli Art Museum was founded in 1766, making it one of the oldest art museums in the United States. The museum is named after Ruth and Frank Zimmerli, who donated their collection of more than 2,000 works of art to Rutgers University in 1963.


The Zimmerli has a distinguished history of exhibitions and publications, and has been a leader in scholarship and education for more than two centuries. The museum has been especially active in the past few decades, organizing groundbreaking exhibitions on contemporary art, Russian art, and other topics.


Collections

The Zimmerli Art Museum houses several important collections, including the Rutgers University Art Collection, the Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection of Nonconformist Art from the Soviet Union, and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Winans Collection of Russian Impressionism.


The Rutgers University Art Collection is one of the largest and most important university art collections in the country, with more than 30,000 works of art ranging from ancient to contemporary. The collection includes paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and more.


The Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection of Nonconformist Art from the Soviet Union is the largest and most comprehensive collection of its kind in the world. The collection includes more than 20,000 works of art by Russian artists who were banned by the Soviet government for their “unofficial” art.


How To Visit

The Zimmerli Art Museum is located at 71 Hamilton Street, New Brunswick, NJ 08901. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 4:30pm. Admission is free for all visitors.
